Picturing the saints

  • The National Gallery Trafalgar Square London United Kingdom (map)

Summary

There were three talks in the morning: The first, 'Introduction to the lives of the saints and their representations: Landy’s saints at the National Gallery' was given jointly by Jennifer Sliwka (Howard and Roberta Ahmanson Fellow in Art and Religion at the National Gallery) and Lucrezia Walker (Lay Canon with portfolio to the Visual Arts, St Paul’s Cathedral).

Jennifer and Lucrezia discussed how saints selected by Associate Artist Michael Landy (for his Saints Alive exhibition) had been depicted in art, and Jennifer discussed the exhibition Devotion by Design, showing how altarpieces, containing images of saints, were constructed and used.

Gill Hart (Head of Adult Learning at the National Gallery) then discussed how she had created and developed the public programme to accompany the Michael Landy exhibition.

The group then visited the exhibition, and after lunch had a discussion with Colin Wiggins, (Special Project Curator at the National Gallery) and Michael Landy. There was a lively discussion at both sessions, covering question such as the public response to Landy's exhibition and how the Associate Artist scheme functioned at the National Gallery.
