‘First Aid’ for Paintings – A practical Incident Response Workshop

The National Gallery has an Incident Response Grab Bag for use by its Conservation department in the event of a malicious attack on one of the Gallery’s paintings. This kit is designed as a first response, much like a first aid kit, to be used to try to halt any damage incurred and prevent further damage until the conservators can attend to the painting.

This Workshop will introduce delegates to the Grab Bag, its development, its contents and how we use it. We will also look at ways these kinds of kits can and should be adapted for use with other collections and institutions, including those that don’t have conservators on site.

The seminar will be delivered by National Gallery Conservator Lynne Harrison through PowerPoint presentation, discussion and hands-on examination of the kit and its contents. One of the Gallery’s Grab Bags will be available for delegates to look at and explore.
