Art, Animals and Politics: Knowsley and the Earls of Derby
/Thomas, Lord Stanley, was created Earl of Derby in 1485 after the Battle of Bosworth Field. Since that time the Stanleys have been significant in the life of the nation as patrons and collectors, sportsmen and politicians.
This absorbing collection of essays, edited by Stephen Lloyd, Curator of the Derby Collection at Knowsley Hall, seat of the Stanleys, covers key facets of the family’s diverse achievements.
Of particular interest to SSN members are the introduction by Stephen Lloyd surveying the history of the Stanley family and the Derby Collection; essays by Richard Stephens, Jonathan Yarker and Xanthe Brooke in section 2 (‘Patronage & Collecting c.1720-1735’); as well as the Appendix on ‘Tapestries and paintings in the collection of the Earl of Derby: 1594 and 1695’.
