National Gallery loans to Stanley Spencer exhibition at Hepworth Wakefield

A forthcoming exhibition of the work of one of Britain’s best-loved painters, Stanley Spencer, opens at the Hepworth, Wakefield on 24 June 2016.

The first major survey of Spencer’s work in 15 years, and presented during the 125th anniversary of the artist’s birth, the exhibition brings together over seventy works spanning his entire career, including rarely seen self portraits and extracts from his diaries and writings, offering a unique insight into his life and work.

The exhibition will also examine the lifelong influence of early Italian Renaissance paintings on Spencer’s work, illustrated by a significant loan from the National Gallery: Botticelli’s Three Miracles of St Zenobius.
