SSN Study Day: Dieric Bouts and the Bowes Museum: Acquisition and Partnership

Our next SSN study day, organised jointly by the National Gallery and the Bowes Museum, and kindly supported by the Pilgrim Trust, will be held at the Bowes Museum on Tuesday 19 September 2017.

The award-winning Bowes Museum in the historic market town of Barnard Castle houses a diverse collection of fine and decorative art covering the period 1500–1900. Among the circa–1500 paintings are works by Sassetta, El Greco, Goya, Boucher, Tiepolo, Boudin, Courbet, Reynolds, and Gainsborough.

The Bowes Museum’s recent acquisition of the painting of ‘St Luke Drawing the Virgin and Child’ by the workshop of Dieric Bouts the Elder (ca. 1400-1475) will provide the main focus for the SSN study day. The day will also be an opportunity to hear about the innovative Bouts Partnership Programme with York Art Gallery and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, and to explore the wonderful collections of the Bowes Museum and their history. This will include a visit to the iconic Silver Swan musical automaton and a tour of the library.
